Reading an Archaeological Plan
A practical guide to scales, north arrows, hatching, reconstructed lines and the difference between a findspot and a building phase.

Find the conventions
Begin with title, scale, north arrow, legend and publication date. Line weights and hatch patterns should explain what is cut, visible above, restored or proposed.

Separate phases
One drawing may overlay several periods. Colour, labels or separate phase plans prevent a later wall from being mistaken for part of the earliest temple.

Return to the report
A plan is not self-explanatory. The accompanying report should describe survey methods, uncertainty, excavation context and the argument behind reconstruction.
