Why Marble Behaves Differently Outdoors
Grain, calcite, water and pollution help explain why a polished sample and a weathered monument can look like different materials.

A metamorphic stone
Marble forms when carbonate-rich rock is transformed by heat, pressure or mineral-rich fluids without melting. Recrystallised grains give many marbles their characteristic texture.

Water finds boundaries
Rain, dissolved salts, freeze-thaw cycles, thermal movement and biological growth can all affect exposed stone. Performance depends on mineral composition, grain structure, detailing and local climate.

Cleaning is an intervention
Acidic cleaners can dissolve calcite; abrasive or high-pressure methods may remove weakened surfaces. Conservation begins with diagnosis and documentation, not an assumption that bright white equals healthy stone.
