A canonical Doric model
UNESCO identifies the Temple of Zeus as a model of the great Doric temples. Its proportions and sculpture influenced later understanding of the order, though the sanctuary contained many buildings of different periods.

Stone and surface
The principal local limestone was finished with stucco, a reminder that ancient architecture was not simply exposed white stone. Material, coating and colour must be considered together.

Ruins as evidence
Earthquake collapse left column drums and entablature blocks across the site. Their positions have changed through excavation and presentation, so current photographs should be read alongside archaeological documentation.
